FAQS

Crystal Industries is a leader in providing innovative Cryo Handling products to help you protect your samples throughout handling of temperature sensitive samples. Whether you need to control thawing of your frozen samples or the survivability of your cells needs controlled cooling rates, these Cryo Handling products provide precision and consistency in controlled temperature to protect sample integrity during sample handling.

FreezeBox™

What are Crystal FreezeBox™ Products designed for?

The FreezeBox™ product line is designed to preserve biological samples at controlled low temperatures while you are working with them (not long term freezer storage) to maintain sample stability outside of the freezer.

  • Keep samples cold during pipetting or sample preparation
  • Prevents degradation of biomolecules that degrade at room temperature
  • Ensures consistent experimental conditions across samples

The FreezeBox is a highly uniform (+/-0.1ºC) mini portable cold environment (no electricity needed) lightweight and easy to carry.

What temperature range is the Crystal FreezeBox product designed for?

Crystal FreezeBox products are designed for cooling, quick freezing and thawing/heating.

The Tube Module is suitable for temperatures ranging from -196ºC to over 100ºC.

How does the Crystal FreezeBox work?

Pre-chill Cooling Core in a freezer

  • Insert the Cooled Core into the FreezeBox
  • Place the Tube Module on top of the Core and insert the Sample Tubes

What are typical applications of the FreezeBox?

Typical FreezeBox uses:

  • Stabilize freshly collected samples
  • Protect sensitive biomolecules, RNA, DNA, proteins, clinical diagnostic samples
  • Preserve sample integrity before downstream analysis
  • Sample preparation processes in a biosafety cabinet or tissue culture hood
  • Clinical sample collection and transport
  • Stabilize samples during multi-step workflows

Is the Crystal FreezeBox reusable?

Yes, the Crystal FreezeBox is durable and designed to withstand repeated freezing and thawing.

Can the Crystal FreezeBox be cleaned?

Yes, with disinfection: Wipe with mild disinfectant diluted at a ratio of 1:9 (i.e., 1 part disinfectant +9 parts water), let it stand for a moment, and then rinse thoroughly with clean water several times.

DO NOT:

Autoclave (will damage EVA and warp structure)

 Soak the unit in liquid

 Use strong solvents:

  • Acetone
  • Chloroform
  • Bleach (can degrade EVA over time and corrode alloy)

Scrub with abrasive brushes (damages wells → affects thermal contact)

What tube sizes are compatible with Crystal FreezeBox?

The Crystal FreezeBox supports a wide range of tube sizes, including:

  • 2 mL tubes
  • 1.5mL tubes
  • 5mL Tubes
  • PCR Tubes
  • Simple select the appropriate Tube Module to fit tubes

What are the advantages of using the Crystal FreezeBox vs other cooling methods?

  • Highly uniform temperature control across all tubes (+/-0.1ºC)
  • No ice contact, no contamination risk
  • Keeps samples at controlled, stable temperatures
  • Clean, dry, organized
  • Works well for PCR tubes, Cryovials and Plates

How do I order the Crystal FreezeBox for my application?

The Crystal FreezeBox can be purchased as a complete package, containing the FreezeBox, Cryo-Core and Tube Module you require, for example:

  • FZB-CL-01 FreezeBox with CL Cyro-Core ( 0.5ºC - 4ºC), Tube Module CM01 (30 x 2mL) or purchase components separately
  • FZB-S1 FreezeBox
  • CL Cyro-Core (0.5ºC - 4ºC) or CF Cyro-Core (-18ºC - 4ºC)
  • CM01 Tube Module 30 x 2mL
  • CM02 Tube Module 48 x 1.5mL
  • CM03 Tube Module 30 x 5mL
  • CM04 Tube Module 96 x PCR Tubes

FreezeCell

What are Crystal FreezeCell™ Products designed for?

The FreezeCell™ product line is a specialized thermal conductive device designed for controlled rate freezing of biological samples, especially cells (mammalian, stem or primary cells) through engineered heat transfer, no liquids making it cleaner, more consistent and easier to use than traditional Isopropanol (IPA) systems. The FreezeCell is designed to protect cells during freezing, so they remain viable when thawed.

How does the Crystal FreezeCell work?

The Crystal FreezeCell is constructed of a thermal conductive alloy that has precise thermal mass and conductivity.

Cyrovials are loaded into the machined wells for tight thermal contact. No electricity or liquid is needed.

Put the lid on and place into the -80ºC freezer. The metal well moderates heat flow from the samples to the freezer. The cooling rate is controlled by the alloy composition and geometry (precision spacing).

Sample HeatMetal WellAlloyOuter InsulationFreezer

No Hot or Cold Spots between wells.

What is the cooling rate of the Crystal FreezeCell?

Cooling is linear and predictable across the FreezeCell, +/- 1ºC/minute. Ideal for most cells.

Why does controlled rate cooling matter?

If cells freeze too quickly, ice forms inside cells and damages membranes with controlled cooling water leaves cells gradually reducing ice formation. If cells freeze too slowly, dehydration and solute toxicity occur.

Is the Crystal FreezeCell reusable?

Yes, the Crystal FreezeCell is durable and designed to withstand repeated freezing and thawing.

Can the Crystal FreezeCell be cleaned?

Yes, with disinfection: Wipe with mild disinfectant diluted at a ratio of 1:9 (i.e., 1 part disinfectant +9 parts water), let it stand for a moment, and then rinse thoroughly with clean water several times.

DO NOT:

Autoclave (will damage EVA and warp structure)

Soak the unit in liquid

Use strong solvents:

  • Acetone
  • Chloroform
  • Bleach (can degrade EVA over time and corrode alloy)

Scrub with abrasive brushes (damages wells → affects thermal contact)

Is the FreezeCell cold when removed from the freezer?

No, the unit is not cold to the touch when removed from the freezer.

What tube sizes are compatible with Crystal FreezeCell?

The Crystal FreezeCell supports up to 12:

  • 2 mL tubes
  • 1.5mL tubes
  • 1mL Tubes

What are the advantages of using the Crystal FreezeCell vs other cooling methods?

  • No liquids – reduce contamination
  • More reproducible cooling profiles
  • Low maintenance
  • Cleaner than liquids for GMP/Regulated Laboratories
  • Faster turnaround time between uses (no pre-cooling wait time)

What are typical applications for the Crystal FreezeCell?

  • Cell therapy, biopharma workflows
  • GMP Regulated environments
  • Labs prioritizing standardization and repeatability
  • High throughput cryopreservation
